A FRENCH ART DECO TWO-DOOR SIDEBOARD BY CHARLES DUDOUYT IN LIGHT OAK WITH WONDERFUL GEOMETRIC RELIEF DESIGN ON THE DOORS, WITH ORIGINAL BRASS KEY AND LOCK DETAIL. MOUNTED ON AN OAK PLINTH WITH CIRCULAR CENTRAL SCROLL. THE OAK TOP HAS AN INTERESTING MARQUETRY PATTERN.

THIS IS A STUNNING QUALITY PIECE THAT IS EVOCATIVE OF THE ART DECO PERIOD WITH A BRUTALIST FEEL, DESIGNED BY ONE OF THE MAJOR FIGURES IN FRENCH 20TH CENTURY DESIGN.

CHARLES DUDOUYT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR MOVING FRANCE’S DESIGN AESTHETIC FROM AN ELABORATE CLASSICISM TO A MORE MODERNIST SENSIBILITY. FOLLOWING WORLD WAR I DUDOUYT ABANDONED PAINTING AND DRAWING TO MANUFACTURE LAMPS AND OTHER DECORATIVE OBJECTS.

HE MOVED TO PARIS IN 1933 MOVING FURTHER AWAY FROM FRENCH CLASSICISM AND ADOPTING MORE REFINED CONTEMPORARY FORMS WITH HIS TRADE MARK GEOMETRIC DESIGNS USING SIMPLE MATERIALS LIKE OAK AND OTHER WOODS.

DURING THIS TIME IN PARIS UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1946 HE PRODUCED PIECES ON A MORE AMBITIOUS SCALE OF PRODUCTION, MAKING LARGER PIECES OF FURNITURE AND SEATING.
